This
scene from Saw
2 (2010) shows the 'Venus Fly Trap' in action. The 'Venus Fly Trap' is
one of many of 'Saws' hideous, gruesome games that he plays with
his victims. The man in the photo has the key to remove the trap from his neck
- however it is in his eye. He is given a set amount of time to get the key out
of his eye but is he does not succeed then the trap with
close inevitably crushing his skull and killing him. We can
see from the blood dripping down the man’s eye that Saw is definitely a
gory horror much more than a psychological film. The amount of blood and
weaponry (the trap itself) within this still image displays body
horror highlighting the films genre. The green, gloomy lighting creates a
dull atmosphere - the colour green itself is supposedly meant to be an
emotionally positive colour that has connotations of a strong sense of right or
wrong, inviting good judgement. This is cleverly used as the man wouldn't of
been put in the situation of having the trap around his neck if
he hadn't of been such a 'mean', 'selfish' and 'ungrateful' man
before these events. The idea of the film is to punish people for doing
wrong or immoral things for their own benefit and so the
use of the colour green within the scene symbolises his
wrong doings and although makes the audience feel sorry for the scenario he
has been placed within - we also feel annoyance towards him and a lack of
emotional care.
